Nicholson Catholic College, Canada

Nicholson Catholic College opened its doors for the first time in September, 1960, when it replaced St. Michael’s High School, which had been in existence since 1930. In 1960, Nicholson consisted of grades 11,12, and 13. In 1965, Nicholson was expanded to include grades 9 and 10, when the Belleville Separate School Board opened Nicholson Senior School adjacent to Nicholson Catholic College.
At present Nicholson includes grades 9 to 12 and has an enrollment of approximately 700 students.
Nicholson was named in honour of Monsignor J.F. Nicholson, V.G., P.A., with whose help and guidance a Catholic high school was first opened in Belleville. Monsignor Nicholson was the pastor of St. Michael’s parish.
International Baccalaureate: Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
Extra Curricular: Every student at Nicholson Catholic College is strongly encouraged to become involved. There is something for everyone. Come out, share your talents, and explore new interests and friendships.
Involvement in any school or community activity will help students earn points towards one of the school letters. The School Letter Recognition Program attempts to encourage involvement and reward participation. It has become a very popular award at our annual awards night ceremony and one that many students strive to achieve.
International Education: The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board welcomes international students into our secondary schools each year. These students come from Asia, Europe, Mexico, and South America. Some come to improve their English or experience living in North America. Others plan to pursue Canadian postsecondary opportunities.
Specialist High Skills Major: Also known as SHSM, is a ministry-approved program offered to Grade 11 and 12 students who want real world experience, a better sense of the type of work they want to do, and an understanding of where a career in their chosen sector can take them. It helps students transition after graduation to their next step, whether that be apprenticeship, college, university, or workplace training, providing them with the opportunity to specialize their learning, gain qualifications, and explore a career pathway while still in high school.
